Protect and Maintain Your Eyesight

Do you know what the second leading cause of blindness is worldwide? It's Glaucoma and over 2.5 million people in the United States alone are at an increased risk of it and you may be one of them. In order to help protect and possibly even save your eyesight, we've created a list of some simple guidelines to keep in mind to maintain your eyesight.

Protecting Your Eyes

  1. Don't Smoke. There have been many very well documented dangers attributed to smoking. Unfortunately those who smoke appear to be at greater risk of developing age related macular degeneration and cataracts.

  2. Exercising more often. According to studies, regular exercise is said to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70 percent.

  3. Maintaining a healthy diet. Many studies show that eating foods that are loaded with antioxidants like fruits and colorful or dark green vegetables can help to possibly reduce the risk of cataracts. Eating foods like fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids might also help to prevent macular degeneration. You may also want to consider supplementing your diet with eye vitamins.

  4. Avoid harmful UV Light. You should try to wear sunglasses with proper UV protection as often as you can. This can help to shield your eyes from the sun's very harmful ultraviolet rays. By doing this you can help to dramatically reduce your risk of cataracts and other eye damage.

  5. Be aware of changes in your vision. Your eye doctor should be contacted immediately if you begin to notice changes in your vision. Trouble signs you should be especially aware of include: double vision, hazy vision and difficulty seeing in low light conditions. You should also be aware of frequent flashes of light, eye pain and even swelling. You may have a serious eye problem.

  6. Regular physical exams. You should visit your doctor's office regularly to have exams done to check for diseases that can cause eye problems. Diabetes and high blood pressure in particular can lead to diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and even ocular hypertension.

  7. Eye Exams. You should have your eyes checked at least every two years. This can help to determine your risk of potentially major eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy. It will also help to maintain an up to date prescription so that your eyes don't suffer the added stress of straining your eyes.

  8. DNA Testing. If you don't have a good awareness of your family's health history a simple DNA test can help to reveal your potential health risks. Personal DNA testing like Metabolic Health Assessments and Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration tests can help make you more aware of your potential for sight threatening diseases.

Take preventative action now. Visit CyGene Direct today to find more information on how predictive and confidential DNA testing like Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration or Metabolic Health Assessments can help you to better understand what your individual health risks may be. Identify your risks early with a simple DNA Test and to help stay on top of your health.

What we feed our bodies feeds our eyes. Many of the vitamins and minerals in our bodies are found in much higher concentrations in our eyes, so a diet lacking in these vitamins and minerals can lead to vision problems as we grow older.
