What Should You Do if you’ve Been Bitten by a Dog

As we know there are over 72 million dogs that are currently owned by Americans. Roughly 4.7 million Americans suffer from dog bog bites each year. It's important to know what to do in the event that you may be one of those Americans who suffer a dog bite. To help prepare you, we've created a simple list of things you should do if you've been bit.

If you've Been Bitten By a Dog

  • The wound should be washed immediately and thoroughly with soap and warm water. It may become infected so try not to wait.

  • While you may still be in shock, do your absolute best to try and take a mental picture of the dog that bit you. At some point you will need that detailed description. Try to focus on breed, color, size and direction in which it ran.

  • Contact your local animal control office and your local police department if necessary. This is where your detailed description will come into play. Do your best to remember every detail.

  • Contact your local health department as soon as you're able to regardless of whether or not the owner says the dog is "up to date" on its shots. You should be able to obtain a history of the dog's rabies vaccinations. Should it turn out the dog is a stray, you will then be required to undergo extensive rabies treatments.

  • If an owner is identified, be sure to get all of the owner's information; home address and contact numbers.

  • As soon as you are able to, take pictures of the bite wound or wounds.

  • Contact an attorney right away. Most attorneys offer a free consultation and can help determine whether or not you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering and loss of wages.

With over 45 years of combined experience, your local Riverside County attorney, Sweeney Attorneys, can help as your dog bite lawyer, dog bite attorney and animal bite lawyer. We want you to know that in the event of you or a loved one has been bitten, that the personal injury lawyers and personal injury attorneys at Sweeney Attorneys can help.
